Initiative Detail
Refrigeration/oil cooling Heat Recovery
Through capturing the heat generated by the oil cooling process in the refrigeration system in our two main slaughtering/processing plants we successfully capture 1MW of waste heat which we use to heat water during production hours.
Through the process in our slaughtering plants, high volumes of heat, generated from the singing unit is available to be recovered and utilized for heating water.
This requires both specialised recovery equipment and sufficient water storage capacity.
Over the last four years the company have upgraded internal lighting in the high use production areas of the two slaughtering plants.
In Roscrea the upgrade involved the replacement of a 58 watt florescent tube to a 26 watt LED tube in high usage areas.
The energy saving on changing these lights is equivalent to a 68% reduction in energy consumption in this area.
In Edenderry we have undertaken a number of projects to reduce our lighting load. This involved changing to more energy efficient fittings, installing PIR sensors and by reducing light up hours in a number of areas throughout the factory. In the areas where the work was undertaken, we have achieved an energy saving of 40%.
Refrigeration accounts for over 50% of the overall electrical load.
By examining and optimising the running profiles of the refrigeration plant we have reduced our electrical load by 5% in our Edenderry plant. Other projects have included installation of additional condensing capacity and air purging units which has successfully reduced our discharge pressure and improved our COP.
